The Sweet Spot from Bozeman, MT-based Sklar Bikes is a steel hardtail mountain bike designed to be a venerable quiver-killer. Built around 150mm of front suspension, with clearance for up to 29 x 2.8 tires, its geometry embraces builder Adam Sklar’s mantra of “fast is fun, but fun is fun-er.” Sweet Spots were Adam’s first foray into offering a small batch frame design and sizing, which he hopes will make his bikes more accessible and faster to produce.
I picked up a Sweet Spot of my own earlier this spring after many years of searching for the perfect hardtail. Due to a few requests I had to make it even sweeter, it turned into a custom project that retained the established Sweet Spot geometry and material selection. Below, let’s take a closer look at my build in addition to a brief interview with Adam about these bikes and his design/build process!

We’ve sung Ergon’s praises before and a recent announcement should pique the interest of DH and gravity riders. If you look at all my mountain bikes, you’ll note they all share one thing in common: the grips! A few years back, I got hit by a car and broke my pinky. It took months of PT to get my grip back to where I could feel comfortable on a mountain bike again. Yet, one thing I noticed was severe pain while on long descents. I tried everything but then a friend turned me on to the GE1 grips from Ergon and I never experienced pain again. Now, I’m not a physical therapist or a bike fit specialist, but the team at Ergon have designed the best grips I’ve ever used and they fixed my hand pain.

People keep talking about dropper posts on cross bikes and while I understand their concerns, I think these Ergon CF3 posts are the perfect solution for those wanting a post that absorbs rough roads or trails. They’re light, fairly easy to setup – use a torque wrench! – and I was amazed at how much “shock” they actually absorb. Aside from rider weight limitations (220lbs), they seem to be resilient. I’ve since put it on my cross bike for trail riding and even after some remounts and wrecks, it hasn’t slipped. I didn’t even use the shim…
